Members Of Maidstone Chambers Tom Dunn (Member of Chambers)

Tom Dunn

Date of Call: 1998 (Lincoln's Inn)

Qualifications: BVC (College of Law), LLB (hons) (Newcastle)

Areas of Practice: • Criminal Law (defence & prosecution) • General Civil Litigation

Profile:   Tom is widely respected as an all-rounder, however since his appointment to the Attorney General’s Unified List of Prosecuting Advocates, he has been inundated with instructions to conduct serious prosecutions. Those instructions come in the main part from RCPO but also from the DWP and BERR. Tom still finds time for defence and civil work. He has a particular interest in planning and regulatory work and has successfully represented Local Authorities in public inquiries across a range of planning cases ranging from domestic change of use through to major commercial developments

Cases of note include:

R  -v- Jandhu. The defendant was tried for masterminding a multi-million pound ecstasy importation; one of the largest in SOCA’s history. He was convicted and sentenced to 19 years imprisonment.

R –v- Southerden. The defendant was tried and convicted for his role in a substantial cannabis importation. The case involved complex disclosure issues that led to successful PII applications.

Deane v Marlon King. Tom represented Marlon, a premier division football player, in a claim for personal injury arising out of a serious assault on the pitch.

Commotion Ltd v Rutty (2006) ICR 290. Tom represented the Appellant in proceedings before the EAT. The resulting judgment remains the leading authority on the flexible working time regulations.

Westminster City Council v Christian O’Connell. This was perhaps Toms’ finest hour. He responded to a plea about a parking ticket from his favourite radio DJ and offered his services pro-bono to reverse a serious miscarriage of justice. He was given the happy news that the PNC had been cancelled live on the Virgin Radio Breakfast Show.

Tom is a passionate skier and a self-taught guitarist. His interests include cooking and writing. Tom lives in West London and is married with two children.

Memberships: Kent Bar Mess and Criminal Bar Association
